Choosing a Safe Diet Pill For Healthy Weight Loss

Diet pills are available in several different forms including over-the-counter, prescription and herbal. Most diet pills ads claim to “boost your energy” and “melt away pounds.” While some diet pills may help you curve your appetite or boost your energy level, you still need to follow a daily diet and exercise routine. Following a daily diet plan, such as a reduced calories, and exercise will help keep the weight off for years to come. Each type of diet pill has its advantages and disadvantages so learning about each one can help you decide which diet pill is safe for you.

Over-the-Counter

Over-the-counter diet pills are sold online, at drugstores, retail stores, health food stores and supermarkets. When purchasing over-the-counter diet pills, be sure to check the label to see if the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approves the pills. While the FDA does not have to approve the pills for them to sell, they can pull them off the shelf or recall the pills if found to be dangerous. Do research on each type of over-the-counter diet pills before you purchase to learn about any safety concerns. Some examples of these diet pills include Hydroxycut, TrimSpa, Stacker 2, Alli, Leptopril and Zantrex.

Prescription

Prescription drugs can only be obtained through a written prescription from a doctor. Most prescription diet pills are used to treat obesity. People with a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 and above can ask for these diet pills. However, people with obesity-related conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, with a BMI of 27 or greater can also request prescription diet pills. Most FDA-approved weight loss pills are for short-term use like a few weeks or months. One type of prescription pill is an appetite suppressant, which comes in the form of tablets or extended-release capsules. One type of appetite suppressant diet pill is phentermine. Another type of prescription weight loss drug is a fat absorption inhibitor, such as Xenical. Xenical works by blocking dietary fat from being absorbed in the body.

Herbal Alternatives

Herbal diet pills are available at the same places over-the-counter pills are sold. Herbal diet pills consist of appetite suppressants, carbohydrate blockers, fat burners and metabolism boosters. The pills contain natural ingredients. While the pills are not toxic, they can interact with other medications. Always consult your doctor before combining any two medications, especially prescription medication. Some examples of herbal diet pills include Hoodia Balance, Dietrine Carb Blocker, Orovo Detox, Nuphedragen, Clinicallix and Hoodia Chaser.

Caution

Do not take any type of diet pills if you are pregnant, nursing or if you become ill while taking it. Only take recommended dosages of diet pills. Consult your physician with any questions you may have about diet pills before taking them. Some unpleasant side effects of diet pills include dizziness, increased heart rate, excessive thirst, increased blood pressure, sweating, constipation, headaches and dry mouth.
